Seating Distance

Distance is set by the width of the picture and how much of your view you want it to fill. Resolution, room size, and where the sofa currently stands all come after that.

Deciding factors

  • The width of the picture, which follows from the diagonal and the aspect ratio
  • How much of your field of view you want the screen to occupy
  • What you mostly watch, because films and games are usually watched from different distances
  • Where a seat can physically go once the room is furnished
  • Whether more than one seat has to work at the same time

How to measure

  1. Measure the picture, not the boxRun the tape across the visible picture from edge to edge. The diagonal on the label includes proportions you are not sitting in front of.
  2. Measure from the eye, not the furnitureTake the distance from the screen wall to where your head actually rests, which on most sofas is well behind the front edge of the seat.
  3. Tape both ends of the range on the floorMark the near figure and the far figure. The answer is a band, and knowing where the band ends is more useful than a single number.
  4. Watch something from each endSit at the near mark for a scene and the far mark for a scene. One of them will feel like work, and that tells you which way to move the furniture.
  5. Check the seats nobody plans forThe outer end of a sofa and the chair in the corner are further away and further off to the side. Measure those too before deciding the room works.

Mark both ends on the floor with tape before you move any furniture. Sitting between them is the whole point of the number.

Formula

  • Screen width = diagonal × 0.872, for a 16:9 panel
  • Distance = (screen width ÷ 2) ÷ tan(viewing angle ÷ 2)
  • A bit of everything uses 30° to 40°. Films use 36° to 48°. Games use 33° to 45°.
  • The closer end of the range is the wider angle

Does not account for

  • Resolution of the source material
  • Your eyesight
  • Ceiling height and how the room sounds
  • Watching reclined or lying down
  • Panels that are not 16:9

Without buying anything

Every one of these moves a person or a piece of furniture. Between them they settle more rooms than any panel size does.

  • Pull the sofa forward a foot and live with it for a week. It is the largest single change available and it costs nothing.
  • Turn the sofa rather than moving it, if the problem is angle rather than distance.
  • Move the side chair instead of the sofa. The seat nobody planned for is usually the one that is wrong.
  • Take one cushion out of the back of the sofa. On a deep seat that moves your head forward several inches.
