Surge Joules
A joule rating is a claim printed in a listing. It describes energy a unit says it can absorb before it stops protecting anything downstream. Read it as a stated number and nothing more.
The stated number
Joules describe absorbed energy. A listing that states 900 J and a listing that states 2700 J are making different claims about how much the parts inside can take before they are used up. Neither number says anything about what happens on the day they are used up.
The number also says nothing about where the strip should sit. That is a question about reach, outlet spacing and cord length, and it is answered by measuring, not by comparing ratings.
Spent absorption
The rating behaves like a budget rather than a wall. Every event draws it down, and none of these listings states how much is left afterward. Some units have an indicator light; the listings here do not say what that light measures or at what point it changes.
A unit that has taken a hard hit is unknown, not proven. Replacement is the only answer that does not rely on a number nobody published. Nothing on this site can tell you when that point has arrived.
No rating, no claim
Some listings state outlet counts, USB counts and cord length, and never mention surge energy at all. On this site those are power strips. They sit in their own group, they are kept off the joule line, and they are not called surge protectors, because the listing never made that claim.
One product goes further. It is an outlet cover with an extension cord attached, and its listing states no surge protection of any kind. It is a way to hide a cord against a wall. Calling it protection would be inventing a claim that nobody made.
Listing marks
ETL, UL and TUV turn up in some of these listings as safety listing marks. Each one means a sample was tested to a published standard by a laboratory. None of them is a ranking, none of them describes surge energy, and a product without one named here may simply have a listing that does not mention it.
Where a mark matters to you, check it on the product itself and in the manufacturer documentation rather than taking it from a summary, including this one.

Everything on the left is printed on the box. Everything on the right would have to be measured on a test bench, which is why no figure for any of it appears anywhere on this site.

- How much absorption is left after a surge
- What the indicator light reports, on units that have one
- Behavior once the protective parts inside are used up
