ARC and eARC

The return path sends sound backward down the same cable that brings the picture forward. Whether it works, and what it can carry, comes down to the port, the cable, and the format, roughly in that order.

Sound in reverse

Ordinarily a cable carries picture and sound from a source to a display. The return path adds a second direction: the display sends its own audio back down that cable to a bar or a receiver, so one cable does both jobs.

That is why a bar can be fed by a single cable rather than a second run across the room. It is also why one failed setting can silence a system that looks correctly wired.

One labeled port

On most displays only one socket carries the return path, and it is labeled on the panel itself. Plugging into the socket next to it produces a picture and no sound, which is the single most common version of this problem.

Nothing on this site knows which port your display uses. Read the label on the back of the panel, and read it with a light, because the printing is usually dark on dark.

Two different names

ARC and eARC are separate claims and the difference is worth reading rather than assuming. Some cable listings on this site name eARC explicitly. Where a listing names it, the card says so; where a listing is silent, nothing is inferred.

The same applies at the other end. A soundbar listing that names HDMI-ARC is stating what that bar does, and it is not a statement about what a different bar does.

Agreement at both ends

The display, the bar and the cable all have to support what you are asking for. The chain fails at whichever of the three claims the least, and there is no setting that raises one to meet the others.

When something works but sounds thinner than expected, the format being sent is usually the thing that quietly changed, not the wiring.

Common failure points

Every maker names the relevant settings differently, and they live in different menus on every device. The documentation for your own display and your own bar is the only reliable guide, and both of them are needed.

Before changing settings, check the cable is in the labeled port and that the bar is on the input it expects. That sequence solves more of these than any menu does.

Stated and not stated

The left column is what each box claims on its own. The right column is what only your two devices can answer between them, and both have to agree before any sound leaves the bar.

  • Which port on your display carries the return path
